In the medieval world there was such a symbiosis between art and liturgy at the time of both plastic and poetic creation, the latter was seen not only as a source of inspiration, but also as interpretation of reality. Therefore, liturgical art, beyond a source of aesthetic pleasure to the faithful, is a celebration of the glory of God. But this is why liturgy is also expressed plastically in buildings, sculpture and minor arts. In this book the author shows, through the study of liturgical iconography, that liturgical science is the key to understanding Christian art and therefore it is not an art of form or ideas, but of presences: Christian art is a transcendent reality .
In this book Santiago Sebastián offers us a compendium of his long years of investigations in which he attempted to unite the various approaches of humanistic disciplines to a better understanding of art. Mensaje simbólico del arte medieval. Arquitectura, liturgia e iconografía is a pioneering, indispensable book for those wishing to deepen the meaning of art and its symbolism.
