Ángel Quintero

Angel Quintero Rivera is considered one of the most outstanding social scientists of the Caribbean. He is the author or co-author of twelve books, among which, for its theme, should be noted ¡Salsa, sabor y control! Sociology of music "tropical", published by Siglo XXI in Mexico in 1998 (third edition, 2005). This book received the Casa de las Américas Award, in the genre of social historical essay, and the Latin American Prize of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) in the United States, as the most important book of Latin America theme published in Spanish or Portuguese between 1998 and 2000. Other books are Ponce: la capital alterna (2003), Vírgenes, magos y escapularios (1998), The other side of the story (1985) and Conflictos de clase y política (1977). He is also author of the chapter on "Music of Latin America" of the Enciclopedia Contemporánea da América Latina, a book which received the Jabuti Award for the most relevant work on social sciences published in 2006 in Brazil. He is a professor at the Center for Social Research at the University of Puerto Rico and founding member of Centro de Estudios de la Realidad Puertorriqueña (CEREP).
